In these challenging times, more than ever, digital experiences are making or breaking businesses. Here’s a peek into the day-to-day responsibilities of Mario, UX Designer in our Atlanta hub, on how he's enabling human-centered design approach.
I was born in Jamaica, but I grew up in sunny Miami, Florida. I took a job here in Atlanta working for and Advertising agency 15 years ago and I've been here ever since. I've been working in UI/UX design for the past seventeen years.
In my spare time I enjoy music, basketball and I did martial arts for several years. Although I don’t train as intensely as I used to, it's still my favorite way to work out.
Tell us about your job. What do you do at Backbase?
At Backbase, I work with our customers to help them design and develop their web and mobile applications using our platform. This means that I introduce them to our Design Kit, train their internal team and consult with them on how to achieve a human-centered design. My main goal is to empower our clients to deliver world-class digital experiences.
I’m excited about the growth and potential of Backbase and I'm glad that I get to be a part of that. I'm excited that with the work I do here I can help improve a person or their family's financial health.
What do your parents / children think you do?
To quote my mom "my son works with computers." I might need to do some more explaining 🤓
What brought you to Backbase?
Atlanta has a vibrant and fast-growing tech scene and fintech is a large part of that. It’s an area that I’ve been interested in for quite some time after working on a few projects when I was with Deloitte. I knew this was an industry I wanted to work in and that's when I came across Backbase. I also knew a couple of people that worked for Backbase and realized it would be a great experience.
How does your work contribute to Backbase's mission to power the digital banking revolution?
After working with a large credit union, I realized that there are many financial institutions in the US that, just like them, are in need for help in making their digital transformation. We provide the expertise and services to ease that transformation. We show them how to keep up with the neo banks and provide customers with the digital products and services they’ve come to expect.
What's unique about Backbase's engineering culture?
We have an awesome culture of teamwork and collaboration. There's this willingness and desire to collaborate, share and help fellow team members. Whenever I have a question about the product, I can reach out to anyone on the team. If they don't have the answer, they will find someone who does.
It may be one of the most collaborative teams I’ve been part of.
Which project are you most proud of?
I've spent a lot of time working with one of the largest credit unions in the United States. I've gotten to work with them on their mobile app and I see the impact in the feedback they get from their customers.
What's challenging about your work?
Working in Product Implementation is not always easy. The pace is fast and you have to be able to anticipate the customer's wants and needs. They may not always agree, but it’s our job to help them come up with the best possible solution.
What advice would you give to someone interested in joining Backbase?
In the words of a famous ad slogan by some well-known shoe company “Just Do It". But first, I would encourage you to get an understanding of the different roles available at Backbase. Discover the type of designer you are and what aligns best with your skills, experience, and interests. You won't regret it.
